about

Whether its downtempo thought-inducing vibes or upbeat club bangers, there’s something for everyone in Lindo Man’s forward thinking grooves and contemporary sounds. Lingua Franca is a debut that is balanced body of work from a talented producer with an already well sculpted signature sound.

Album opener Goldilocks is a pleasant journey starting with a nursery rhyme-esque lead melody before kicking into pleasant sparkling synth lines, powerful soul vocals and a laid back beat that uplifts the listener from the start without breaking a sweat.

Thrice is built on a vocal hook that will stay with you for hours after listening. Tasteful piano lines and a driving beat keep it going before a half time breakdown introduces syncopated rhythms into the mix and a relaxing finish comprising of warm synths and a xylophone to boot.

The intro to Only One reminds of the best features of 90’s dance whilst still retaining a current sound rooted in Bass music. Upbeat but counterbalanced with a tinge of desperation in the vocal lines refrain: “Please believe me when I tell you, you’re the only one”. It’s a wonderful paradox that expertly sums up the overwhelming emotion of being in love with someone.

Finally is a dance floor banger with crisp production blending a hypnotic kick and tight bass with a jazz piano chord arpeggio over a variety of synths and high frequency textures that come in and out of focus bringing a great sense of light and shade to the track.

The opening synths of Buttermillk Sky have a beautiful VHS style wobble and fragile soulful vocal snap that leads the way for a laid back percussive groove that is full of aplomb. Progressing through to an outro not dissimilar to its beginning the track has a disarming quality that is hard not to warm to.

Boite Aux Reves is a Fender Rhodes led piece that evolves into a dubstep inspired slow swung beat made from sci-fi-esque synths that wouldn’t be out of place on Doctor Who. The obligatory soulful vocal snaps grow into elongated lines before a dropout and restart from the top with some extra tasteful melody lines and rapid drum fills to accent the bars.

Blancmange is unashamedly happy and bouncing affair made on an African percussive groove that is so summery it could melt a snowman. With an extra bit of sparkling early 90’s Hip Hop synth flavour and playful samples that perfectly compliment this tunes mood - this is a track that transports listeners back to carefree days relaxing in the sunshine.

On the other end of the spectrum from its immediate predecessor When They Come lays down a moody swing with a deep bassline alongside the ominous lyrics and Trap beat. Uneasy and full of tension, the track slinks around with wobbled synths and high pitch shifted emotive vocals cutting through the mile-deep bass whomps.

Mad Dem is a straight up, hands in the air track that is so good Mixmag made it their tune of the month. Reverb drenched ragga vocals drip from guest vocalist – Parly B all over Lindo Man’s energetic broken beats that produces a perfect storm of hybrid electronic music. Audiences and DJs alike will be thanking them for this track for years to come.

The jazzy arpeggio previously featured from Finally kicks off Glory as Lindo Man reversions elements of the track in a whole new light with harder drums and real purpose. Glory by name glory by nature in this feel-good track bursting with pride.

Reprising the soul vocal snaps of Only One is it’s more relaxed and ambient sister track W Out You. Elements of House and Chillout run through this heavy reverb and sidechained synth number that would be perfect for an early morning Ibiza session.

Closing proceedings is Last Call. An appropriate end-of-night track that bring all of the styles and production sheen of the album together over a two chord jam that’s crammed full of melody that completely embodies this producers sonic signature. The sampled disembodied voice explains they’ve “Got to Go” perfectly wrapping up a beautiful sign off track for the album.
